Halloween night, we had Grandma & Grandpa Harrell, Grandma & Grandpa Alloway, Ratchel and Katie (our cousins) and each of them brought a friend, Kelsey, Nick, and Conner, and Great-Grandpa Loyd over for trick-or-treating. We got all dressed up and headed out about dark. Grandma Nita saw to it once again this year that the kids were the cutest on the block - she made all of the costumes, special ordered by each grandkid, just to their liking! The kids loved trick-or-treating this year! We had to take turns at each house ringing the “ding-bell”. They would RUN up to the front doors this year, as long as the house wasn’t too decorated – they weren’t too fond of some of the scary decorations.

We had a really fun evening. The adults even cashed in at one house in Grand Oaks that gives out Martinis to all the grown-up trick-or-treaters! After going through the neighborhood, we headed to the Mall Deli to see Aunt Carrie, who had dressed up with some of the other workers there as the Village People. It was really cute. After that, we came home and devoured chili, taco soup, cornbread, pumpkin pie, and pumpkin bars. It was delicious! Baby Conner (and Kelsey & Nick) spent the night with us, too, which finished off a perfect Halloween night!

Pumpkin Carving

Molly decorating her "pig" - she thought the ears looked like feet, so she ended up with an earless pig with "flippers". I cracked up, but not in front of her - she was so proud of her masterpiece!

Molly, the only one brave enough, helping me clean out our pumpkin to carve it.

Rayleigh's doggy pumpkin - a face perfectly placed, of course, as she is my particular, very meticulous one (chip off the ol' block is what her dad says - I have no idea what he is talking about).

Pumpkin carving night was a crazy night. There were a million things to do and very little time to get them accomplished in. First thing in the door from picking up the kids from school and Bev’s (after a crazy day at work, Molly’s snack day and a Halloween parade at the girls’ school, and trick-or-treating at Bev’s – all by 4:00pm), I started cooking up a big pot of chili to cook in the crock pot for Halloween night. We were having quite a crowd over for the festivities, so I whipped up some pumpkin bars as well. Because Rayleigh had been in the hospital at the first of the week, a lot of things had been bumped to the end of the week. Amanda, our housekeeper, was coming on Friday (instead of Tuesday), so that meant that the laundry had to be picked up and put away, dishes done, and the rest of the house straightened. That is a full evening in itself most weeks! Plus, we had planned to carve the pumpkin early in the week, but that also had been put on hold and Thursday evening was the only evening left to do that as well. The best part – Tyler had already committed to going to a football game with a friend for the evening and couldn’t back out, so that left yours truly to do the rest. By the grace of God, it all got done. I included a few pics of our pumpkin carving session. None of the kids wanted to touch the “pumpkin guts”, but I finally talked Molly into at least trying it. That used to be our favorite part as kids! We ended up carving a spider & spider web on our pumpkin, but I didn’t get it all finished that night. I finished it up early Halloween evening and set in on the porch just in time! Needless to say, I slept very well that evening!

One rough day . . .

Yesterday was one of those days that most of us could have lived without having to have experienced! When Rayleigh came home from school on Monday, she said her head hurt. Needless to say, as the evening progressed, so did the headache, and by 12:30 am (Tuesday), the headache was so bad that it was causing her to vomit. She swore to me that her stomach did not hurt – just her head (right behind her forehead), but despite the lack of stomach pain, she vomited 10 times between 12:30 and 9:45 in the morning. It was a long sleepless night, and she was miserable. I felt so bad for her, and all I wanted to do was to be able to make the pain go away.

Molly went to school by herself for the first time Tuesday, and Tyler said that she was very brave. She explained to the teacher that Rayleigh was sick at home, and that she would help her do her schoolwork when she got home that day – she’s quite the big helper. While Tyler delivered the other two to their resting spots for the day, I called to get Rayleigh a Dr.’s appointment. The headache was out of control, and she couldn’t even hold down two tablespoonsful of anything. Our appointment was scheduled for 10:10am.

Dr. Gometz looked her over – ears were clear, throat was clear, no fever, nose was clear, no sinus problems, ruled out meningitis – but still was vomiting and still had an unbearable headache. He said his gut told him it was something viral, but he was not willing to go off of that feeling. He wanted to make sure that it wasn’t something more serious, and she was seriously dehydrated, so he admitted her into the hospital for observation.

Up to the third floor we went. She didn’t even flinch when they started the IV – no tears, no reaction at all. It wasn’t until later that I understood that she was so terribly dehydrated that she was disoriented at that point. After a short nap, she woke up and thought she was in Kansas City (where we were this weekend) – between the pain and the dehydration, she was out of it! It wasn’t until after pushing a whole IV bag and a ½, that she “came back to us” and knew who & where she was again. From that point on, she progressively got better throughout the day. The headache started to fade a little, she got a little color back in her cheeks, and by evening, we even got to see her crack a smile. She quickly learned that she got to be queen of the remote, and we must have surfed all 100 channels at least 35 times yesterday!

The silver-lining for the day came from Molly. One never quite understands the love of a twin sister, but it is the most beautiful sight that any mother can imagine. When one hurts, the other does too. They understand one another in ways that no one else can. Sometimes it is painful to watch at first, but when you look at the big picture, it is the most heartwarming thing you can imagine. When Molly walked into the hospital room after school, she took one look at Rayleigh, so limp & colorless, then she walked straight over to me, buried her head in my shoulder, and began to cry. She hurt so bad for her sister, and she didn’t even understand. We had to take a little walk and I sat and rocked her, and explained that Rayleigh was here to get better, and that she could stay as long as she wanted with her. Molly was upset because Rayleigh wouldn’t get to sleep with her tonight, but Rayleigh had already taken care of that. Even as out of it as Rayleigh was when she had gotten her IV, the nurse offered her this soft, little plush flower. She had asked to have an extra one for her sister when she came to see her – how thoughtful. So when Molly went back into the room to see Rayleigh, Rayleigh explained that Molly could take the flower home with her tonight and sleep with it, and she would sleep with her’s that way they could remember each other throughout the night. It was so sweet. Then Molly showed Rayleigh a seashell that she had gotten to pick from the treasure chest at school today for being so brave to come without her sister. She gave Rayleigh the seashell to keep with her for the night as well. Molly was the first person to get Rayleigh to smile again as well. She would hardly respond to the rest of us, but Molly said one little thing to her and she would light up! I can almost sit here and cry just thinking about how blessed I am to be the mother of twins (there are times when TWO babies are crying, needing fed, or needing bathed that you question God’s motive, but one tender minute with them makes up for DAYS of crying, feeding, tough minutes with them!

Carrie met Tyler at home to help him with bath and bedtime for the other kids and spent the night to help deliver everyone in the morning – I love having such a wonderful family so close! Rayleigh and I were getting ourselves situated to hit the sack for the evening when she started to get sick again. She sat up quickly in bed and pulled her IV. After 10 minutes of the nurse “adjusting” the needle in her hand (and Rayleigh crying because it hurt so badly – she was shouting “Help me, Daddy”), it was determined that we had lost the line and we would have to restart a new IV. The nurse tried in the other hand and missed again – it was awful! She finally called in “helicopter Judy” from the ER (she is the life-flight nurse) and she got it started in the hand that had already been poked earlier. Needless to say, she will probably be scared to death to get shots from now on, but she still understands that the shot was what made her better too, and she has been very “grown up” about the whole situation.

We both slept “all night” (from 2:00 until 8:00 – waking up at 4am, 5am, 6am, and 7am for labs, BP checks, etc.). She ate her 8:00am breakfast of lime jello and cherry frozen slush – yuk!!! She was still on clear liquids. We walked around the halls a little & she was much, much better today. We are dismissed to leave here in a little bit, and she is released to eat lunch at home today – they gave her the option to eat in the hospital or at home, and with a breakfast like the one that she was offered, can you blame her for wanting to eat at home?!

Praise God for a quick recovery!

A Fun Weekend

This weekend was a lot of fun. We got tickets for the KU football game vs. Texas Tech from Jill & Jared Pile – they have season passes and couldn’t make it to the game, so we graciously volunteered to take the tickets off of their hands! It worked out perfectly, because this was also the pharmacy school homecoming tailgate, so I got to go early and see a few of my friends from pharmacy school before the game as well. Amanda Vander Tuig, a college student here at PSU that we have become friends with, is from Baldwin City and was home for fall break so she kept the kids for us while we were at the game. It was so sweet of her to do this for us so that the kids could come with us, too.

The seats were AMAZING – the game stunk! Despite the fact that we got spanked by Tyler’s cousin, Graham Harrell (not really, but that’s what he’s been claiming all season), the seats made going to the game worth the whole trip! We sat in reclining seats in the end zone, with flat screen TVs in front of us for reviews and other football games / scores. There were no lines, and no wait for anything – even private bathrooms for only the people sitting in the end zone. Longhorn steakhouse catered during the whole game (as much as you could eat) and beer, wine, and other beverages were all INCLUDED!!! Waitresses walked through during the game to check on us. It was sort of unreal!! Tyler decided right then and there, that he would be naming his next child Jill or Jared, after giving us those seats!! The weather was perfect, to boot!

The kids had a blast at Amanda’s while we were at the game, and then we took them to the motel for swimming later in the evening. They enjoyed jumping on the beds and swimming in the pool. We stayed in a two room suite that night, and the kids loved it. They jumped on the beds, took turns pushing the elevator buttons, swam, and ate waffles with strawberries & whipped cream – needless to say, they loved it. We wore them out & headed home on Sunday. Tyler needed to shop for some work clothes on Sunday, but the kids just aren’t shoppers, and it just wasn’t worth the fight on Sunday, so we caved in and came home. The shopping will have to be put on the back-burner (again), and saved for another day!

KU Football Game Pics

Tyler certainly didn't mind sitting this close!

Just livin' a dream!

Where's the beer?!

Harrell looks pretty good on the back of that jersey - look out, Graham, Tucker will give you a run for your money in a few years!

We were so close that we could catch these as they came through the goal posts! Jill & Jared - YOU ROCK!!

Grandparents Day at SMC

These pics are from Grandparents Day at the girls’ school on Sept. 19. I just got the pictures is why I am so late on the blog post (sounds like a good excuse anyway!). The girls had a lot of fun showing off their “new home” to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s, as well as their church and classroom! The grandparents attended mass with the kids first to start the day – I guess it was so full that both grandpas had to stand up. Next year they will know to go earlier, the kindergarten parents were the ones standing – they’re still learning the ropes! Then the Home & School group served cinnamon rolls to all of them in the activity center, followed-up by a trip to their classroom to show off their hard work. It was a nice time for Grandma & Grandpa to meet their teacher as well. I think the family involvement is only one more reason that we are so happy with our decision to send the kids to a parish school! So far, we love it!

My Favorite Things . . .

I’m always asking the kids at the end of the day, “What was your favorite thing today?” So I thought that maybe I should share some of my favorite things from this week as well.

Monday: Eating lunch with Tyler & all the staff at The Plastic Resource Group at El Charro. Once a month, Tyler takes out all of his employees for lunch and then gives them an hour break following the lunch. It’s just something nice that we enjoy doing to help build comradeship between employees and gives us a chance to escape from “shop talk” for a while and learn more about who we are outside of the office.

Tuesday: Eating lunch with the girls at school. Anytime that we would like, we can go eat lunch with the girls in their classroom. They have been begging me to come, and I love it that I can go on Mondays or Tuesdays since I’m not at work, so this Tuesday was our first of many dates to come. It is amazing how much better little smokies and mac n’ cheese taste when shared with two cute little kindergarteners! I could tell that they were feeling pretty special while I was there, and they were so polite! It was amazing to me that they raised their hands like little ladies when they were done to get permission to scrape their plates & carry them to the stack to be cleaned! How come I can’t even get them to carry their plate to the sink at home (let alone scrape it clean first)! Anyway, I was very impressed with them being on their best behavior at school.

Wednesday: Tyler & I’s first experience of Parent-Teacher conferences. It went very well. The girls are doing great in school and Ms. Landrith says that they are a pleasure to work with in class. We always worry about our children and how well they are learning, so it is always reassuring to hear that they are doing well! It was a nice ending to a good day. The kids had fun that evening too, as they got to stay with our neighbors (their best friend) while we were at conferences.

Thursday: After I picked the kids up from school and Bev’s at 3:00, we went to the park until 5:00 when Tyler got off of work. I love having the afternoon / early evening time to devote to the kids before having to rush right into dinner. The more opportunities that I have to do these things, the more appreciative I am that I am only working three days per week, and only during the hours that they are in school anyway. Molly has learned to do the monkey bars by herself (she can do 15 in a row at school), Rayleigh’s favorite is the swings since she can swing herself now, and Tucker loves the slides. He thinks that he can do the monkey bars too, since his big sisters can, but he still needs some “spotting”!

Friday: TGIF!!! Need I say more?! I am worn out tonight, so I think my favorite part of today is just that it is the end of the week, and that we have Pitt State Homecoming to look forward to tomorrow. All the grandparents are coming over and we are going to the parade and football game tomorrow. The kids are wanting to tailgate, but we will see.

Pumpkin Patch Trip

Today we made our annual Pumpkin Patch trip with all of the kids. The girls got to go with school last week, but Tucker hadn’t gone yet, so we all made the trek again. We found the perfect pumpkin to carve for our front porch too! All of the kids enjoyed the day very much, and Grandma Nita & Papa Gail got to come go with us as well. It’s always nice to have a few extra hands around to help out when headed for outings! The patch has really grown again this year. They still had all the classics from before – the big slide, the corn maze, the hay maze, all the picture scenes, the hayrack ride, the “barrel” ride, and the infamous “corn box” (it’s a huge “sand box” filled with corn kernels – the kids love it! This year they added two blow-up attractions – one that looks like a huge caterpillar with slides and also a bounce house – plus homemade ice cream & cotton candy, which they ran out of much to Tyler’s dismay, and a slingshot! We had so much fun that Tucker cried when we had to leave. I think I recall a similar scene last year with the girls!

The rest of the day, we hung out with Grandma & Grandpa at our house – we are so fortunate to have them so close that we can relax and enjoy each other for the whole day and not even have to pack anything for overnight! We love Saturdays like this one!

Tucker's 3rd Birthday Party

Tucker's 3rd Birthday Party
